Life is a Beach at Dinner Theatre
By Annika Hanson
On May 16th and 17th, the Washington Middle School Dinner Theater held its annual dinner shows. This year's theme was a Beach Party.
Each year students design a logo for the event and it is featured on the t-shirt worn by those who participate and volunteer to help. This year, seventh grader Madelyn Uryase won the Dinner Theatre logo contest.
Mrs. Noonan, an eighth integrated language arts teacher, began this club at WMS three years ago. She said she had participated in Dinner Theater when she was in school and thought it would be great to start it up again. Mrs. Mercieri said she joined Dinner Theatre because she wanted to put her time into something fun and exciting.
Trina Di'Mella, grade ten, high school student and Dinner Theater alumnae, did the choreography for the five songs. Mrs. Zeiser and Ms. Pappas helped to make decorations and serve the food.
Annika Hanson, Bryan Craig, Madison Papallo, Alexis Dievert, Breanna Formanski, Erionne Shields, Emille Zocco, Emily Barton, Jessica Ellis, Brittney Felix, Mozza Maindu, Raven Santello, Te'Rell Knox, Rachel Testa and Kimberly Preece were among the many returning waiters and waitress as well as some new students who took part. Many WMS teachers and staff also helped to make the event a success.
"Hot Hot Hot," by Kiddie Krew; "In The Summertime," by Mung Jerry; "Knee Deep," by the Zak Brown Band; "Surfin in The USA," by The Beach Boys; and "Walking on Sunshine," by Katrina and the Waves were the songs waiters and waitresses danced to this year.
Dining on marinated and grilled chicken breast topped with pineapple and green pepper salsa, the guests also enjoyed red bliss potatoes with fresh dill and sautéed summer squash, all served with warm corn bread. Prepared by Ms. Albanese's enrichment practical arts cooking classes, vanilla pudding with gram cracker crumbles was served for dessert.
"It was fun and exhilarating to be part of the show," said those students who participated. They especially liked it when they danced with the audience and other club members.
Special thanks to the amazing teachers who gave their time and effort to make the show spectacular.

Say Hola to Spanish!
Hola students :)

There is a new world cultures/Spanish teacher at Washington Middle School, Ms. Figliomeni. According to Figliomeni, "Teaching Spanish at a middle grade level is new to me. I taught high school Italian for seven years before this," she said.
She said she likes to work together with Mr. Dehnel, the other Spanish teacher. "Mr. Dehnel and I collaborate when we want to introduce a new unit. We break down information by combining classes and showing a PowerPoint. This helps students to pay attention because it is fun and interactive," she said.
In her classes, sixth graders are learning about clothing items. They are working on a small project where each student is drawing three people in clothing that is appropriate for the season.
Be good in Ms. Figliomeni's class and you might just be rewarded with stamps or even a homework pass, she said.
"I LOVE Washington!" states Ms. Figliomeni. "The most important thing to me is that kids have fun while learning in my class, she said
